Find your way through Berlin

mapsmaze is a free map puzzle game on the real streets of Berlin. Study the map for a few seconds, then find your way to the address from memory, junction by junction, like a maze made of a real city.

Three phone screens from mapsmaze: the map to memorise, a junction at street level with arrows to choose from, and the delivery receipt with the score.

Where you play

Letters in Berlin start in Mitte, around Friedrichstraße and Unter den Linden, on the city's real street map from OpenStreetMap.

Berlin's streets

Mitte is wide and orderly: long, straight streets in a loose grid, with Unter den Linden running east–west through it. Distances are bigger than they look on the map, so a wasted block costs more here than in a medieval centre.

How a round goes

  1. Study the map. You see the streets of Berlin, where you start and where the letter goes, for a few seconds.
  2. Walk it from memory. The map goes away and you're in the street, at street level. Choose a street at each junction and run to the next one.
  3. Deliver the letter. Points for a direct route and a quick one; every peek back at the map costs 50.

New players pick 3 cities to start with, so you can choose Berlin straight away. Delivering letters earns stamps, which open more cities. The daily letter, the same for everyone, is set in one of the game's cities, and it could be this one.
